From the Co-Founder of Book House Inc.:
When I started into trade publishing, the Book House, Inc. was just the sort of thing I wish I'd had. I needed help crafting my first book proposal. I needed an agent to listen to me. I desperately needed an editor. I got very, very lucky. In the past decade, writing books for Farrar, Straus and Giroux, Norton, and Princeton University Press, I've learned a lot about publishing--about how to craft a successful proposal, how to snag an agent, and how to work effectively with agents--and I've hatched a plan to turn ideas into popular books. In short, I've come to realize that publishing is not a matter of luck or connections, but about learning how to position good writing in order for it to be taken seriously. This is why I helped found the Book House Inc.. Over the years I've met a collection of outstanding writers and editors, who share this vision about writing and publishing. Today, they form Our House, our house Trade Authors and Editors, that form the book and article development agency which extends the insights of its consultants to other talented writers with great books in their desk drawers.
Why didn't the Book House Inc. happen sooner? In part, I was too busy writing my own books. Authors often live rather insular lives. It took meeting the second Co-Founder for me to realize the full potential of the Book House, Inc. Kathleen was a marketing leader at IBM for almost a decade and now runs marketing and sales for a tech start-up. Putting our heads together, we realized that many of today’s sharpest writers never get to become published trade authors because they lacked the resources and practical skills to make the leap. We also met an increasing number of successful trade authors and editors who wanted to help. So we created a platform for these two groups to collaborate--Book House, Inc. was born.
We hope the Book House Inc.--with its stellar consultants and a deep understanding of the obstacles to publishing--makes the journey to becoming a popular author much easier, smoother, shorter, than it is today.
Best,
John Kaag, Co-Founder
Trade Author, Non-fiction and Memoir, Op-Ed Writer, Co-Founder Book House, Inc.
Business Leader, Vice President, Marketing, Sales, Co-Founder Book House, Inc.
The Books House, Inc. team of celebrated trade authors shares a common vision: that the art of writing is profoundly democratic, but that the business of writing is not. These authors, from every walk of life and whose expertise spans the field of non-fiction came together to work with aspiring trade authors to level the playing field, to “hack” the business, and to make trade publishing work for every writer and not the privileged few. Our instructors and consultants are proven teachers in the art and business of writing--patient, firm, knowledgeable, and deeply caring. In short they have joined (or visit) the Book House because they want you to succeed. The atmosphere at Book House Inc. is profoundly cooperative--precisely because the atmosphere of trade publishing is so profoundly cut-throat. The courses at Book House Inc. are spring training for a long and difficult season of publishing. Our success at Book House Inc. is your success as a published trade author. Plain and simple.
There are no magic bullets, but there are particular tricks to writing and publishing popular books. If you are a wonderful writer but lack the tools to access the publishing world--well, you won’t have much luck. You won’t even have the opportunity to be lucky. But, with the help of Book House, Inc., you can acquire some of the needed expertise to craft a respectable trade proposal in non-fiction, creative non-fiction, and memoir. You can also learn how to build a writing portfolio through popular essays and opinion writing that will put you in a good position to write and sell a manuscript.
Book House Inc. offers guidance on writing, but this is but a small segment of the advantage that we give to aspirin authors. We know your time is valuable and you want to dig into a book with the help of a good editor. What Book House, Inc aspires to do is make that move possible. Getting a “yes” from a trade house is not that hard, but it takes a fresh perspective on writing and selling your art and your thoughts.
