workshOp: OP-ED Publishing

Workshop Description

3 week course - 1 day a week, 2 hours sessions

Time and Format: 7-9 pm EST, VIRTUAL Zoom

Cost: $850


Description: This is a signature course of Book House, Inc..  Forty students will join two op-ed writers and one editor at a major outlet for this three week intensive course on the business of writing and publishing successful op-eds.   Each instructor will be responsible for teaching a two-hour seminar and will split the role of reviewing op-ed drafts for the class.  Before enrolling, participants will have interesting and motivating opinions and a deep desire to translate them into published op-eds in major outlets such as the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, or Harpers Magazine.  Note that this workshop is for writers interested in writing popular op-eds and popular essays.   You should also note that writing shorter nonfiction pieces can be used to create a portfolio that will help you make the leap to book writing should you wish.   The six hours of class time will be structured in the following way:


Day 1--Op-Ed 101 (Writer 1)

  1. The Question of Expertise and Timeliness
  2. What to Write and How: Effective Hook Writing
  3. The Anatomy of Op-Ed
  4. Evidence and/or Opinion
  5. How to Close: The Art of Conclusions
  6. Creating an Op-Ed Publishing Network

Assignment: Write a Hook and 200-Word Introduction delivered prior to Day 2


Day 2--Essay 101 (Writer 2)

  1. What Makes Essays Publishable?
  2. The Varieties of Successful Essays
  3. Length, Style, Form: Appealing to Market
  4. Interpreting the Literary Landscape: Or Where to Submit
  5. How to Get An “In” At A Major Outlet

Assignment: Write a 300 word introduction to Personal or Literary Essay AND choose between Op-Ed or Essay to submit in full four days before Day 3 (NB: Day 3 is two weeks from Day 2)


Day 3--Hear from the Editor 

  1. “What I Am Looking For…”
  2. How to Pitch Effectively
  3. How Important is Expertise?
  4. What Are The Most Interesting Pieces?
  5. Working With An Editor

Assignment: Submit a final draft of op-ed or essay to Book House Inc. team.
