Lydia Moland

Popular Essayist, Intellectual Historian, Cross-Over Author

Lydia Moland teaches philosophy at Colby College in Waterville, Maine.  Her area of specialty is German Idealism, in particular Hegel’s ethical  and political philosophy. She is the author of Hegel on Political Identity: Patriotism, Nationality, Cosmopolitanism (Northwestern, 2011) and of several articles, including “An Unrelieved Heart: Hegel, Tragedy, and Schiller’s Wallenstein” (New German Critique, 2011), “Grasping the ‘Raw I’: Race and Tragedy in Philip Roth’s The Human Stain” (Expositions, 2008), and “History and Patriotism in Hegel’s Rechtsphilosophie” (History of Political Thought, 2007). During her fellowship at the American Academy in Berlin, in  2005, she published two journalistic pieces in German newspapers:  “Krankenhäuser, Feuerwehren, Kosmopoliten: Wie der Patriotismus unter  die Räder kam” (Tagesspiegel) and “Patrioten für Europa” (Handelsblatt).
